Abstract
This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of energy saving devices onboard Ro-Ro vessels on the Gulf of Guinea. The energy saving devices available onboard ships were understudied, and the effectiveness of use of energy saving technologies such as low carbon fuels on energy efficiency design and operational index of ship in terms of fuel consumption and cargo volume (dead weights) was investigated. The effectiveness of use of energy saving technologies such as low carbon fuels on energy efficiency design and operational index of ship in terms of ship speed and voyage distance — as well as in terms of cost of ship operation — was analyzed. Energy Efficiency Operational Index (EEOI) methods were employed to assess the effectiveness of energy saving devices onboard Ro-Ro vessels as regards fuel consumption, speed, voyage distance and cost of ship operation. Results showed that energy efficiency operation index depends significantly on speed, voyage distance travelled and fuel consumption, except dead weight which showed no direct relationship. High energy efficiency operation index is the consequence of high speed, voyage distance travelled and fuel consumption. It was discovered that the energy efficiency operation index for MV Mary, which used MDO and HFO as fuels, is 1.80336 × 10⁻⁵ g CO₂/ton mile — which is more than that of MV Indigo, which used MDO and LPG and whose EEOI is 1.79 × 10⁻⁵ g CO₂/ton mile. Also, the amount of money spent on fuel by MV Mary in 2018 is ₦612,500.00, which is less than the amount of money spent on fuel by MV Indigo in the same year, which is ₦927,500.00. This is similar for the voyages of the two vessels for subsequent years in the study period. Conclusion and recommendations were made that further research should be carried out on investigating the effectiveness of energy saving devices onboard other types of ships other than Ro-Ro vessels.
